Reply:Aloha Ashlyn,
My name is Kona Jugoz, three years ago I started researching my Family Genealogy. My 2nd Grandmothers name was Elizabeth Hailani Haupu, she was born at Kaupo, Maui. Elizabeth had 10 keiki, her fourth child was my Grandmother Anastacia Hamole Ho'opi'i. Anastacia my grandmother is 91, she is alive & well on Maui. One of my aunties on Maui remembers the Kanuha Ohana when she was a little girl. I was able to find Louis Haupu Kanuhas' Cemetary Record, it also lists his parents as Haupu & Kaaiakala. My Tutu was also able to confirm Kanuha was her Uncle.

Comments:I also do genealogy as a hobby and love researching, especially when you find interesting site like this that gives you information on varies families. My father, Frank Haleakala is from Maui where I was raised along with 12 siblings of which 8 is still there. I know my father's father is related to the Hoopii family somehow, but don't know where to start on that line. I know his family came from the Kaupo area but my grandfather was born in Peahi on Maui where I think he was raised. Thank you.

Reply:Aloha Annette,
My name is Kona Jugoz, each day we're blessed to find new connections to Ohana from all over the world. I will add the Haleakala Ohana to my search if I find a connection I will refer to your entry into our Guest Book where I have your Email Address. I found out there where at least two "Hoopii" lines that originated in Kaupo. In the 1800's Hawaiians were in transition from single Hawaiian Names, to European style first & last names. Our Hoopii was the Son of Nohua, so his name should've been Hoopii Nohua. What happened is he took on the First name "Bernard" and kept "Hoopii" as his last name. There is another "Hoopii" whose father was Beranaba Palenapa Kekahuna from Kaupo. If you search Hoopii Kekahuna and his siblings they were all born at Peahi, which is now known as Makawao. I beleive he is the ancestor of Richard & Sol, the Hoopii Brothers from Kahakuloa. Be careful though there are at least 3 other Hoopii families from Maui. Also the Hoopii name may have been shortened from the Family name "Kahoopii". Thank you for providing me with another peice of information.

Reply:Ashlyn,
Our Hoopii Ohana Reunions are usually on Maui or Kauai, the last one was at Kahului two years ago. There is another one planned for August 2004 @ Kekaha on Kauai. You must be related to Alcian Clegg, she has also been on our site. I gave her my address & Phone number for the next Kanuha Reunion.

The Joseph Kahahawai story is a tragic, but true story. It is said "those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it". It is great that your brother is involved in retelling the story.
