Comments:Aloha! My Aunty Sharon told me about your site. I'm also interested in genealogy research. My grandmother's cousin married a Hoopii, and her sons are The Hoopii Brothers. Is this the same Hoopiis?

Reply: Aloha Tracy,
Mahalo for checking out our Ohana site.
In old hawaii our ancestors traditionally used a single name my Great grandfather was named 'Hoopii' he was the Son of Nohua & Hamole of Kaupo Maui. I'm still researching possible relations to the Hoopii Brothers of Kahakuloa, but it looks like their patriarch is Hoopii the Son of a Kekahuna from Peahi, Maui. Working with Hawaiian Genealogy for several years I've found our ancestors cleverly renamed their children after their older generations possibly to preserve the ancestry. So in essence the two Hoopii's could be connected but we haven't traced far back enough to be certain.

There was an entry in your guest book from Alice Kai (Bayobay) Barber from the Big Island. If this is the same Alice, please tell her I said hi. Mahalo Nui, Sandy

Comments:I have just found your amazing website, Ka pai te website!! I have been searching for my great great grandmother Heni Nuka, born in Lahaina, she married an american whaler John Howe who bought her to NZ around 1850,they had a son,Hone Hau (John Howe), the whaler left NZ shortly after, and nanny Heni died 1908, is buried at Christs Church Russell, Bay of Islands NZ. For many years my whanau believed nanny Heni was tangata whenua (Maori),but searchs have proved she was from Hawaii - I'm wondering if you have come across this name in your own searchs. Kia kaha e hoa ma, Kia ora.

Reply: Aloha Katariana,
Thank you for you kind comments & for checking out our family website. Your Great great grandmother Heni has such an interesting story. It would be great to make a movie based on her adventures from Hawaii to New Zealand. Although I have not come across a Heni Nuka in my research yet, I will definitely keep her name in my memory. Before 1853 Hawaiians did not use surnames as we do today, so back then there was no way to distinguish relationships between parents, brothers & sisters other than actually knowing who was who. Your Great great grandmother may have been related to our Makekau, Pue, Alakiki or Kahahawai families all originated in Lahaina, Maui in the early 1800's, We could possibly be cousins.

Aloha & God Bless,

Comments:I was very interested by the comments sent in by Katariana Waititi referring to Heni Nuka. My husband is also a descendant of Heni Nuka and her story confirms our own research but we also found that her ancestors could have come from the island of Nihau,Hawaii where the original language of Hawaii is spoken and it is similar to maori which would account for her easy assimilation into maori life in NZ. But that island is privately owned and has restrictions and if you are possible cousins then you could be possible cousins to my husband. I ENJOYED THE SITE THANK YOU VERY MUCH

Reply: Aloha Jo anne & Bill,
Yes, Heni Nuka has such an interesting story, the next time I visit the State of Hawaii Archives, or the Bishop museum. I will see if they have any information about her in their files. If Heni was from Niihau it may be all the more difficult to trace her roots. In old Hawaii the main form of communication was verbal, songs, chants & dances. Only as the missionaries arrived in Hawaii did our ancestors learn to read & write. For this reason alot of our genealogical information is gone. Each day goes by, Hawaiians lose another kupuna (ancestor), and along with them they take valuable treasures of knowledge. I will keep you, and Katariana updated, if I am able to locate any information regarding Heni Nuka.

Comments:Aloha, My son was recently researching our family name through the internet and came upon your website. I am very interested in a comment dated on June 7, 2004, from Tia Mailani (Poopaa) Kahawai, of Kailua-Kona, regarding information on her grandmother, Marynancy Mailani Molale, daughter of Mary Kaluhiokalani Makekau Molale and Samuel Kekoa Molale, Sr., of North Kohala, Hawaii. My father is Samuel Kekoa Molale, Jr., Marynancys' younger brother, who is still living! I would very much like to get in touch with Tia and share with her the knowledge of the Molale ohana. Mahalo for having this site!
